Kirirom National Park, often called the “Mountain of Joy”, is one of Cambodia’s most refreshing escapes into nature. 🌲✨

Here’s an overview:

• Location: Situated in Kampong Speu Province, about 110 km (2–3 hours) from Phnom Penh, making it a popular weekend getaway.
• Landscape: Unlike much of Cambodia’s flat plains, Kirirom sits on a plateau about 700 metres above sea level. Its cooler climate, pine forests, waterfalls, and fresh air give it a very different atmosphere compared to the rest of the country.
• Nature & Wildlife:
• Vast pine forests (introduced during the French colonial era) create a highland feel.
• Natural waterfalls like Chambok and small streams are popular picnic spots.
• The park is home to wildlife such as elephants, deer, wild oxen, and various bird species (though spotting them can be rare).
• History: The name Kirirom was given by King Monivong, meaning “Happy Mountain.” During the French colonial period, it was a hill station retreat with holiday villas (some remnants still remain).
• Atmosphere: Peaceful, cool, and misty compared to the hot lowlands — almost like stepping into another world within Cambodia.

Kirirom National Park is 112km from Phnom Penh on national road 4 to Sihanouk Ville. It is located in Phnom Sruoch District, Kampong Speu Province, while a smaller section is in neighboring Koh Kong Province. Kirirom National Park, whose official name is Preah Suramarith Kossmak, is about 80,000 acres of forested land on a rare plateau in southwestern Cambodia in the Elephant Mountains. Kirirom is lying at 675m (2,215 ft) above sea level.

Kirirom is one of the Cambodia’s famous resort in Sangkum Reas Niyum. Kirirom was Cambodia’s first officially designated national park. It contains many footpaths through the forests with a number of small lakes, pin tree, beautiful natural landscape known as (Dipterocarpaceas, Moist dense dipterocarp forest) and waterfalls and was once used as a refuge by the Khmer Rouge.

The meaning of “Kirirom” is “Happy Mountain”. This name was given to the area by King Monivong in the 1930s. The ancient name of the place was Phnom Vorvong Sorvong for the main two hills there were connected with the Cambodian popular legend about two heroic princely brothers, Vorvong and Sorvong. The park extends over the eastern part of the Cardamom Mountains. It is located 112 km from Phnom Penh of National Highway 4 on the road to Sihanoukville.
